Do you think Shakespeare existed? Or are there just to many plays and sonnets credited to him to be the work of one person?
The new film Anonymous questions his prolificity and his existence.
If you think these claims against history are a waste of time, why do you think they are periodically raised by so many people?
Well, that’s interesting, and actually the first time I have heard the idea. I do recall my English teacher telling us that most of Shakespeare’s plays were remakes of classic Greek tragedies, so not having to come up with the plot lines probably saved him some time.
And there is the legend of Kerouac banging out On The Road in three weeks, on one scroll of paper – and other rumors of books written in a night. Which is exceptional, but is it not possible that a man could have been so inspired for so many years? Sure, it’s possible, but I guess then we are left with the question of likelihood.
To be honest, I am not sure how many titles are credited to the guy (if he was indeed one guy!), & almost all authors have assistance from friends, editors, and the like. But that would have been a clever idea, to have a group of poets and playwrights, working for a common goal.
I’ll have to check that movie out…
