I Am The 99%

Across the U.S., and now elsewhere in the world, a protest movement is rising called Occupy Together.  You can read live updates of the original Occupy Wall St. event, that’s still going.  Also take a look at we are the 99%, a related website where people interested in the Occupy movement are telling their stories.

Write a post where you give your point of view. Do you think these protests are a good thing? Do you agree with their belief that there’s something wrong?

I think that Occupy Wall Street is a wonderful thing, I think that their message is very clear – only it is so broad and controversial in scope, it’s hard to fit in a sound bite. And easy enough to mock from Murdoch Headquarters.

But the movement is real, and it’s sticking. And spreading! Sounds like Rome might be getting out of hand – which is really pretty typical of those crazy fucking Romans, God bless ’em… But as I now sit in the cold quiet of Alaska, there are thousands gathered in Washington Square Park. Doing the call-and-response dialog that has been such a striking feature to me, when watching the live-stream broadcasts. Two points I would make off of that observation are; that call-and-response is a form of communication with origins in African music, and is also big in the churches – can I get an Amen?

As a sub-point here, I would add that the live-stream footage always makes me think of a music concert or festival – just without the music and the drugs…but the protests do have that musical form of discourse – which, is not the old back and forth of slogans, but rather long declarations and doctrine.

Here’s an excerpt, regarding the likelihood of arrests this evening, and probably also in reference to the new enforcements proposed for tomorrow (which will ban all sleeping bags and tarps – despite the fact that the protesters have organized sanitation crews, and have a collection of donated port-a-potties).

(We are) willing to get arrested…

but this does not mean we cannot come back here.

& more will follow.

At that point the mic went out – which may well have been a simple sound board issue, but you might possibly end up thinking it was the po’. If you were paranoid or something.

And the second point that I wanted to make is that the online network that has been established is truly exceptional – certainly a bit verbose, so then it does take the pages a bit longer to load, but those live feeds – coming in from NY to SF and beyond, are a trip!

I mean this could be the next big thing… something might actually CHANGE because of the development of this movement!

Wouldn’t that be something?

Ok, so I know that there is a debate to be made on either side here, but one’s got a lot more BS in the trunk than the other, let’s be honest… There are a fair amount of people in my life that I love and/or admire who hold some pretty conservative points of view. I respect that. But if you really want to make the case for the multinational corporations that have a choke hold on America’s economics and it’s government? Then you are probably just lying to yourself – aren’t you?

Yes, you most certainly are, and you are smarter than that! So mebe we could just get real and fess up to what the fuck is going on around here? When I ran my small business, in a good month – I would pay out a solid fucking QUARTER of my GROSS profits, in taxes.

When was the last time Exxon paid any fucking taxes? And if we took like a quarter of their monthly revenues? We could rebuild fucking Detroit and take the entire goddamn planet out to dinner.
