Wow, Press way to get all philosophical on me! But we are going to start simply, OK…there were two objects near to me that were in contention for smallest object. A wine cork and a lighter…and the award goes to…
the wine cork! (applause)
It’s a pretty big lighter, and a remarkably old one, to boot. It’s a Djeep, the French kind, and it’s covered in leather (probably fake) & has Kokopeli playing his flute carved in that (fake) leather.
It also has little pockmarks from all the times I have used it for a thimble.
But this wine cork is much smaller! It is from a bottle of port, whose portrait appears in an earlier post. The one bottle of wine that has most diligently lived beside my bed – which, I believe, most people would take as a bad sign…
Bonus: Use your imagination – are elements the smallest thing? atoms? quarks? How do you feel about the fact we keep finding smaller and smaller things inside of things that are already quite small?
